I was invited to the grand opening of one of our favorite restaurants, Yabu House of Katsu, at the newest mall in town — Robinsons Magnolia. Robinsons Magnolia is named such because it stands where the iconic Magnolia Ice Cream House used to be. I still remember eating Ernie and Bert ice cream sundaes there as a child.
Since the place was brand spanking new, I got to take a photo of Yabu’s condiment tray in perfect condition! These are what you need for dipping and dressing your tonkatsu and your unlimited shredded cabbage. There’s an assortment of seasonings such as tonkatsu sauce, sesame dressing, pepper, and chili oil.
We had two appetizers, Superior Potato and Egg Salad and Wakame, as we waited for the main course. How apt since these are my favorites among Yabu’s four appetizers (the other two are Edamame and Hiyayakko Tofu)!
I spent quite some time grinding my sesame seeds for the tonkatsu sauce while waiting. Service was quite slow that evening due to the large number of guests. There were actually no vacant seats inside and outside the restaurant!
I decided to order something I haven’t had yet, and that was the Rosu Katsudon Set (P315). Yabu’s signature crisp outside and tender inside pork tonkatsu is served over a bowl of steamed Japanese rice and covered in miso-based sauce and eggs. It’s really delicious! If you want your tonkatsu saucy, soupy, and drenched in flavor, this is the way to go!
Since it’s a set, it comes with a bowl of piping hot miso soup, and unlimited shredded cabbage.
You also get slices of fresh fruit and pickles! For P315, the Rosu Katsudon Set is really worth every cent because it’s a complete meal already.
We were also served Yabu’s Creamy Crab! Shredded crab meat in mayo is coated with crunchy tonkatsu breading and served hot off the frying pan. It comes with a small bowl of tartar sauce and lemon wedges. Yum! I’d eat more than one if I weren’t so afraid of gaining weight. XD
Congratulations Yabu for a very successful opening at Robinsons Magnolia! This is now officially my favorite branch! I will definitely be back soon. 😀
