I won’t mince words. If there’s one thing I’m very confident about it’s my driving. I consider myself quite skilled in this department and I’m pretty sure I can go head to head with male drivers any day.
Thus when I received an invitation to participate in the Shell FuelSave Mommy Bloggers Driving Challenge, I immediately said yes. We assembled at the UCC branch located by Burgos Circle and we were oriented as to what the challenge entailed. Everyone would be driving a Ford Fiesta and filling up with Shell FuelSave Unleaded. If it were simply a race I was certain I’d win but it wasn’t. The winner would have to be both fast and fuel-efficient… so you needed to finish first while going the longest distance with the least amount of gas.
There were four teams consisting of two mommy bloggers each. Each team got a handbook and a BlackBerry.
I was on Team B and my partner was mymomfriday. We were assigned to a white Ford Fiesta. I was the designated driver because I knew the routes to our destinations best.
The Ford Fiesta was so high-tech that when we first got in we couldn’t quite figure out how to lock the door and turn on the headlights. I got it all halfway through the race though.
Even though one of the fuel-saving tips was to use the aircon sparingly, or better yet not use it at all, it was simply not an option for us because it was so darned hot and it was almost noon when we started the challenge. I was happy with the fact that the Ford Fiesta’s aircon was cold so we were comfy the whole time. To make a long story short, each team had to stop at three different destinations (Bonifacio High Street, Greenbelt, and Power Plant Mall) and shop for things needed to hold an 8th birthday party for 10 kids. We were given a budget of P3,000 each. Since I was focused on the driving and planning our routes, I left the party planning to my partner.
First Stop: Bonifacio High Street
Second Stop: Greenbelt
Third Stop: Power Plant Mall
The contest mechanics state that we had to use the BlackBerry to upload our photo to both Facebook and Twitter at each stop but our BB was not really working as it didn’t have the FB app installed. I just used my own cellphone to upload via Instagram since it could simultaneously upload to FB and Twitter.
We came up with a superhero-themed birthday party for an 8-year old boy. We had decor, a cake, party favors, food, prizes, and game props. We spent P2,955 out of P3,000. This is where our performance took a bit of a dive since we spent the most money among all the teams, hahaha! In order to win, you’d have to be the most fuel-efficient, fastest, and save the most money. XD
Anyhow, our team came in second! Mymomfriday and I both took home the following prizes:
- P3,500 SM gift certificates
- P2,000 The Spa gift certificates
- Mind Museum tickets x 4
- P2,500 Shell gift certificates

Here are some fuel-saving tips I picked up:
- Drive smoothly.
- Use higher gears and avoid over-revving.
- Avoid excess idling.
- Use air conditioning sparingly.
- Keep windows closed.
- Avoid carrying excess weight.
- Keep your car well-maintained.
Win or lose, this event is hands down one of the best and most fun ones I’ve ever participated in! I really enjoyed the competition and the company of my fellow moms. Thank you Shell, Ford, and EON! 😀
