We decided to go to Thailand for the holidays this 2023. The kids and I have never been there and my hubby’s first and last visit was back when he was a teenager. My mom actually grew up in Thailand and lived in Bangkok for many years. She is fluent in Thai. I’m not. I never picked up the language unfortunately. It was their (mom, grandma, and aunt’s) secret language. They would switch to Thai whenever they wanted to talk about something they did not want us kids to hear. My good friend Marj has always considered Bangkok as her favorite city in the world. I have always wondered why, since I always hear that Bangkok is like Manila. I know I find every other city I’ve visited somewhat better than Manila.
Marj suggested booking Novotel Bangkok Platinum for our accommodation and I’m SO GLAD I listened. As you can see, the room is great. They ran out of rooms for 4 because I booked late so I had to get rooms for 2. The room rate was ₱9,700+ per night inclusive of buffet breakfast. It’s usually lower if it’s not Christmas season which is considered peak season.
We get a great view of the city and the room is immaculately clean. There’s the usual TV, coffee table, and study. There are also robes, hangers, slippers, and an ironing board in the closet. They give you 2 bottles of drinking water a day, but you can request for more for free if needed. There’s also a selection of instant coffee, tea, plus an electric kettle and a refrigerator.
The room is equipped with a Samsung Smart TV you can easily sync your phone to so you can watch Netflix or whatever else you want from your phone mirrored to the TV screen.
The bathroom is nice, clean, and complete with amenities. Hair dryer, toothbrushes, vanity kits… everything is there.
Breakfast buffet is reminiscent of Sofitel’s Spiral in terms of esthetic, though it’s not nearly as big. It is sufficient though. They have fresh fruits, an assortment of breads, sausages, bacon, ham, pancakes, and all the usual breakfast items. They also have a few Thai dishes like Chicken Satay and Fried Rice.
Lots of healthy options like granola, oatmeal, yogurt, etc.
I was impressed by the coffee machines, there was one which could grind coffee beans on the spot and brew a fresh nice cup of coffee.
It was the first time I encountered an Egg Station which offered Egg Benedict! I usually just get an omelet. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day and the Novotel Bangkok Platinum breakfast is well worth it. Even if you are not staying at the hotel, you can walk in and avail of this breakfast buffet for only 350 baht per person. Considering a Big Mac Meal at the McDonald’s downstairs is 225 baht and an order of coffee at Starbucks is about 150 baht, this is so much more worth it.
Location-wise, Novotel Bangkok Platinum is top-notch. It’s connected to Platinum Mall, which houses tiangge-type shops selling everything from fashion items to snacks and a really awesome food court with stalls and full blown restaurants. The hotel is also annexed to the Ratchaprasong Skywalk which is connected to the BTS Skytrain (Bangkok Mass Transit System) and places like Centralworld Mall, The Big C, Erawan Shrine, and so forth. Superrich Moneychanger, which has the best rates for currency exchange, is also a few steps away from the hotel. Given the horrendous Bangkok traffic (yes it’s WAY WORSE than Manila), the more places you can walk to, the better.
Novotel Bangkok Platinum’s front desk is super helpful. I asked them to help me book AOT Limousine service to the airport and I just gave them the calling card. They did the rest. Unfortunately AOT required a bank transfer deposit which I couldn’t do since I don’t have a Thai bank account so we ended up booking an airport van from Novotel. It cost 2,000 baht and it easily fit 6 people and 6 big suitcases. AOT’s van cost 1,300 baht, we booked it from the airport to the hotel. Next time, we know better and we will book AOT’s hotel-to-airport service upon arrival since they have a big counter at the airport.
We enjoyed our stay at Novotel Bangkok Platinum so much we will definitely stay with them again when we go back. I have a video of the hotel HERE.
