If you follow me on Instagram, you would know that I am currently in the middle of a weight loss and physical fitness journey. I’m not happy with myself. I turned 50 this year and if I’m obese, old, and frumpy I would be so pitiful. Since I was overweight most clothes looked bad on me, which in turn made me hate shopping for them. I have a lot of good friends who are influencers (this is the world I come from pre-pandemic since I have been blogging for over a decade). The are always dressed to the nines every event. Since I attend events sparingly these days, it was hard not to feel left behind and and yucky at their midst. I just really have very high self-esteem so I could still show up despite all those feels.
Let me tell you something. When it comes to self-improvement, no one can help you but yourself. You have to START wanting to improve. You don’t need anyone else to tell you what to do. For me, since my weight was the biggest issue which in turn could directly affect my health, I decided to subscribe to a keto-based meal plan. My meal plan purveyor is Meals by Lily HC. Contrary to popular belief, a keto diet isn’t all about eating meat and fat. It’s more about eliminating sugar and carbs so that your body will start using fat as an energy source therefore utilizing those extra fat stores in your body. I subscribed to the Keto Basic Plan. That’s 3 meals a day from Monday to Saturday and I pay ₱3,150 a week plus ₱360 delivery fee.
I love the food. There’s a good variety of tastes, textures, and flavors. Dishes are always well-seasoned. Perhaps the only down side is beef doesn’t seem to be their strong suit, as the beef in some dishes are not tender. Other than that, everything is great — even the veggies! On my first week when I was adjusting, I had a semi-permanent headache and I was feeling hungrier than usual. I stocked up on keto-friendly snacks (also from Meals by Lily HC) such as that Avocado and Black Masago Aburi (₱750) in the photo above. One to two such scoops wrapped in seaweed is now enough to sustain me all afternoon as merienda.
Meals by Lily HC also offers baked goods and keto-friendly spreads. I don’t miss rice but I’ve always been more of a bread person. This Charcoal Keto Loaf is by far the most normal bread-like keto bread I’ve tried… and boy have I tried a lot. I love how it’s crisp outside and soft inside when I toast it. It goes so well with Meals by Lily HC’s Truffle Cream Cheese Spread. These are actually sold as a set for ₱650 (cheaper vs buying them individually).
Food is really what will make you gain or lose weight. In the past I’ve tried going to the gym and sweating it out everyday with no food adjustment and there weren’t any significant results.
As a result of almost 2 months on this diet:
- I drink water a lot more, which is good because I used to not drink enough.
- My clothes now fit a lot better. I used to struggle to zip up my XL Giordano pants (HK size so no it’s not that big) but now they slide right up so easily.
- Tops are no longer snug and wrinkly on me.
- I feel much lighter and more energetic. I was already feeling heavy and sluggish prior to the lifestyle changes I’ve made.
- My tolerance for sweets became much lower.
- I’m more mindful of what I eat.
Overall I feel better about myself. From a health standpoint, my father’s side of the family is diabetic and so cutting out sugar is always a good idea for me. You’re also more prone to lifestyle diseases if you are overweight and so I decided it’s time to take control of my physical well-being.
