Dengue fever is widespread again. I have a lot of friends being afflicted by dengue lately. I think the rainy weather is a factor because mosquitoes breed wherever there’s standing water (puddles, water containers, etc.). Rain means lots of places where water can accumulate, which in turn translates to more mosquito breeding grounds. The more mosquitoes there are, the more chances of getting dengue. Hence we always have insect repellent on hand. My latest discovery is Cycles Sensitive Insect Repellent.
L-R: Cycles Sensitive Citronella Patches (P124), Cycles Sensitive Non-Deet Insect Repellent (P254), Cycles Sensitive Natural Insect Repellent (P294)
I personally never let my kids go out of the house without some form of protection against mosquitoes. Dengue fever is frightening because there’s no medication or treatment for it. We had the chance to try Cycles Sensitive Insect Repellent products and what can I say? We’re really happy with them so far!
There are two kinds of Cycles Sensitive Insect Repellent Lotions: Cycles Sensitive Non-Deet Insect Repellent (P254) and Cycles Sensitive Natural Insect Repellent (P294).
Cycles Sensitive Natural Insect Repellent (P294)
What’s the difference? Cycles Sensitive Natural Insect Repellent is an extra mild insect repellent lotion formulated with citronella and eucalyptus. It can be used by children aged 0 and up… yes, newborn babies can use this variant! It provides up to 3 hours of protection against mosquito and insect bites.
The lotion’s consistency is light and non-greasy. This variant has a strong citronella scent. You smell it as soon as you open the bottle. I find the P294 per 100ml bottle very reasonable for a product that’s completely baby-safe. It’s never too early to start protecting your kids from dengue especially during this season.
Cycles Sensitive Non-Deet Insect Repellent (P254)
The second variant, Cycles Sensitive Non-Deet Insect Repellent, is formulated for older kids and it’s recommended for kids 1 year old and up. Its active ingredient is Picaridin, which has been proven effective in repelling mosquitoes and insects. This provides 8 hours of protection against mosquito and insect bites so it’s our lotion of choice. My kids put on lotion around 6am, just before we leave for school and they’re dismissed anywhere from 3pm to 4pm so we need the extended protection this variant provides.
I immediately noticed the absence of the citronella scent (well… this uses Picaridin after all and Picaridin is both odorless and non-greasy). I guess that’s good because although my kids and I don’t mind the scent of citronella, there are some people who prefer products with no scent. Consistency-wise, it’s the same as the other lotion in that its lightweight and non-greasy. Both lotion variants are dermatologist-tested, hypoallergenic, and have no fragrances and dyes.
Cycles Sensitive Anti Mosquito Citronella Patches (P124)
If you’re not comfortable with topical insect repellents, there’s also Cycles Sensitive Anti Mosquito Citronella Patches (P124). These patches are infused with essential oils like Citronella Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Pomelo Oil, Lemon Oil, Peppermint Oil, etc. The patches come in a resealable foil pack so the unused patches can maintain their efficacy.
Each pack contains 12 patches, so the patches come out to around P10.33 each. That’s a little over P300 a month, which is perfectly reasonable if it means keeping your child protected from dengue fever. The lotion is probably more economical though as a 100ml bottle usually lasts us more than a month. You can stick these patches onto clothes, bags, and even furniture — anything that’s in the vicinity of your baby.
Since my kids are aged 14 and 11, we our preferred product is the Cycles Sensitive Non-Deet Insect Repellent… although I like bringing along a pack of patches in my bag so if ever we find ourselves in a mosquito-infested place I can stick them onto the table or wherever for instant protection.
We’ve been using Cycles Sensitive Insect Repellent for over a month now and so far so good! My kids have been protected well against mosquito and insect bites. None of them have been afflicted with dengue (thank goodness!) and I intend to keep it that way. When it comes to my children, there is no compromise. I choose what I think are the best and the safest products for them because their health and well-being are the most important things to me.
