Well this year has been quite shocking. For starters, yesterday marked my 3rd month of cooking. I swear, I started out not knowing how to chop or even wash anything when our cook left. It was Google all the way. Right after I started cooking, I got to meet NIGELLA LAWSON. She even signed my cookbook. I’m like I know a bunch of people who’d give anything to be in the same room as Nigella. Two months later, I got an invitation to a Cupcake Masterclass with no less than the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. I guess all roads lead to the kitchen where I’m concerned, lol!
Oh yes, it really was the Cake Boss Buddy Valastro himself conducting the cupcake decorating masterclass. Just to give you a brief background, Cake Boss is an American reality television series which follows the day-to-day operations of Carlo’s Bakery. As one of the owners, Buddy Valastro is the star of the show. For a celebrity chef, he sure is an unpretentious salt-of-the-earth type of guy. He was very warm, friendly, and accommodating… so game when it came to answering all our questions!
Each of us had our own cupcake decorating workstation.
Buddy did a brief cupcake decorating demo which was flashed on big wall-mounted screens. This is so everyone in the room can see what he was doing. After he did several cupcakes, he asked us to come up with our own creations.
I did what I do with makeup — I swatched first so I’d know which piping bag contained which color and shape. Then I proceeded to decorate the 4 cupcakes which were assigned to me.
Buddy went around to check our works one by one. He cheerfully obliged for a selfie too!
Here’s what I came up with.
Buddy singled out this particular design and said he liked it.
The TLC people meanwhile thought that my rendition of a Christmas tree was pretty and took photos haha.
After the class, we were all given signed certificates by Buddy Valastro. Of course my seatmate Jill and I had to take a photo of our moment onstage with the Cake Boss! He signed our aprons too.

I’ve been watching Nigella and Buddy for a long time. I would love to have a chance to meet them someday, too.
