We were fortunate enough to catch the tail end of the Studio Ghibli Animation Exhibition Bangkok 2023. It was extended until January 2, 2024. I saw the poster at the entrance of Centralworld, our favorite mall and the place we spent the most time in shopping and eating.
My kids grew up on Studio Ghibli movies. They would watch My Neighbor Totoro on DVD daily as toddlers. I was very much into anime back then (hence the moniker animetric) so I was the one who curated the stuff they watched. It was mostly Sesame Street (my era) and Studio Ghibli movies. Hence they never got into Barney and whatever was in fashion that time.
The Studio Ghibli Animation Exhibit is made up of breathtaking dioramas of iconic scenes from Studio Ghibli films. There are also interactive portions as well as photo op installations. This trick-eye scene is from Laputa Castle in the Sky. The entrance fee for walk-ins is 680 baht or ₱1,082. Since it’s been going on for about half a year already (it started July 1 if I’m not mistaken), we pretty much had the entire exhibit hall to ourselves — which was great!
This is yet another scene from Laputa Castle in the Sky. The dioramas are accompanied by the equivalent musical scoring too.
The installations are so detailed it feels like you can just open the door and join in the scenes. This is from Kiki’s Delivery Service.
There was a huge section devoted to My Neighbor Totoro.
The attention to detail is just astounding.
This is probably one of the most iconic Totoro scenes ever. You can actually pick up an umbrella and have a photo with them although you can only stay outside the rails.
This scene is from Spirited Away.
This one too.
This is one of the photo op installations, we got to sit next to Spirited Away’s No-Face.
I have a Instagram Reel with videos of the exhibit HERE. If you’re in Bangkok and you’re a Ghibli fan, this is definitely a must-visit. Centralworld LIVE is the perfect venue for it too. It’s very clean, spacious, and the airconditioning is great! There’s also a souvenir shop upon exit selling the cutest merch.
