My mother-in-law gave me 2 big heads of Romaine Lettuce from Baguio a couple of weeks ago. But she told me not to serve it raw because of the COVID19 situation going around. I looked around for recipes for cooked lettuce but couldn’t really find anything interesting. I wanted something like Tim Ho Wan’s Poached Lettuce. Anyway, my good friend The Hungry Chef told me that quick steaming is the only way to go where lettuce is concerned. I tried blanching and it wilted… but we still ate them because fresh veggies are so hard to come by during community quarantine. So steamed lettuce it is.
My recipe calls for ingredients that you most probably already have at home.
Steamed Lettuce with Chinese Style Sauce
Ingredients:
- 1 head Romaine Lettuce, wash it and chop off the base so the individual leaves are separated
- 3 tbsp light soy sauce (I used Kikkoman Low Sodium Soy Sauce)
- 1.5 tbsp sesame oil (I used Lee Kum Kee Sesame Oil)
- 1.5 tbsp oyster sauce (I used Lee Kum Kee Panda Brand Oyster Sauce)
- 1 tbsp minced garlic
- 1.5 tbsp sugar (I used muscovado sugar)
- 4 tbsp water
- 2 tsps sesame seeds
Step 1: Roast the sesame seeds on a pan until light brown. I used a non-stick pan with no oil for this.
Step 2: Mix together soy sauce, sesame oil, oyster sauce, sugar, minced garlic, water, and 1 tsp sesame seeds in a measuring cup. Make sure sugar is completely dissolved.
Step 3: Steam lettuce until moist but not wilted. Quickly transfer to a plate. Repeat until all the lettuce leaves are steamed.
They lettuce leaves should look like this.
Step 4: Pour the sauce mixture into a soup pan and heat until it simmers. Keep stirring to make sure the ingredients blend well.
Step 5: Turn off heat and put all the lettuce leaves in the soup pan. Use a pair of tongs and make sure all the leaves are coated with sauce.
Step 6: Transfer to a serving plate. Pour the remaining sauce into the plate. Sprinkle 1 tsp sesame seeds all over the lettuce. Serve.
Voila! I served Steamed Lettuce with Chinese Style Sauce alongside Fisherfarms’ Shrimp Poppers and well, steamed rice. Even though we’re in community quarantine, I try my best to feed my family healthy food. I’ve cooked this 3x already and everyone can’t get enough of it! 😀
Disclaimer: Taste may vary if you use different ingredients. You can get most of the stuff I used from the Sysu Food Hub on Lazada.
